Winter Energy Saving Tips

Winter brings increased utility costs as the days get shorter and the temperatures drop. Although some amount of extra cost is inevitable, there are many ways to save on utility bills that can prevent normal winter heating and lighting from exceeding your budget.

Heating:
  • Put on extra clothing instead of turning up thermostat
  • Lower thermostat at night and when you are gone during the day
  • Consider a programmable thermostat to do the work for you
  • Keep window coverings open in the day to let in the sun's warmth and closed at night to retain it
  • Maintain your HVAC system and change furnace filters regularly

Appliances:
  • Run dishwasher and washing machine when they are full
  • Use cold water cycle - this saves up to 75% of your washer's energy use
  • Consider laying clothes flat or hanging clothes to dry
  • If replacing appliances, upgrade to Energy Star models
 Lighting:
  • Install a timer on outdoor lights and lights in infrequently used rooms
  • Switch to CFLs - they consume less energy than incandescent bulbs
  • When decorating for the holidays, use LED lights

Miscellaneous:
  • Turn ceiling fan rotation clockwise to trap heat inside and gently push hot air back down
  • Consider a humidifier - moist air feels warmer and holds heat better
  • Use exhaust fans sparingly
  • Plug leaks and drafts - use caulk and weather stripping where needed
