Building a Tradition for More than 50 Years

Don Hartz, founder of Hartz Construction Company.
With over half a century of experience constructing homes that are just as high in quality as they are in value, the founder of Hartz Construction Company Don Hartz is looking forward to many more years of providing exceptional housing choices for families throughout the Chicagoland area.

After honorably serving his country as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Don Hartz searched for yet another way to help American families. He discovered his perfect opportunity when he recognized the need for well-constructed single-family homes that were also affordable for growing post-WWII communities. Hartz purchased a modest parcel of land and built five homes at 93rd and Harper on Chicago’s south side. By applying the tactical skills he had learned during his time as a pilot to his new mission, Don grew Hartz Homes into one of the most recognized and respected home construction companies in Chicago. Those five homes were only the first of more than 15,000 single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums, and apartments that Hartz Construction Co. has ultimately gone on to design and build.

The entire Hartz Homes family is extremely proud and grateful to have this opportunity to create beautiful homes in wonderful communities for generations of Chicagoans to grow up in.

The Hartz Blueprint for Success

To say that Hartz Construction has heart is more than a simple play on words. They feel a true desire to build not just houses, but homes that families can build their own special memories in while becoming part of a close community. Don Hartz acknowledges that his company’s reputation is only as good as the last house built, which has led to his guiding principles serving as their bedrock for the past half century. He chooses sub-contractors, financial institutions, and suppliers that actively pursue a similar mission of quality paired with value, and carefully chooses employees who share the same level of integrity, solid judgment, creativity, initiative, courage, and respect that Don expects from himself and his entire management team.

A Family Business

Even after 50 years, Don remains active as both leader and visionary overseeing Hartz Construction with his wife Linda. He serves as President and Chairman of the Board. Linda Hartz enjoyed a successful career in banking before officially joining Don in 1992, functioning as Corporate Secretary. She was named to the Board of Directors in 1994 and administers the company’s profit-sharing plan. Linda further contributes to Hartz Homes through such important tasks as coordinating homeowners associations and maintaining company records. Don’s daughter Denise Hartz Ibarra is also part of the Hartz Construction team, and has been for 23 years. She currently oversees the Design Center and helps homeowners make a smooth transition into their new home.

Choosing a Hartz Home

Staying true to Don’s vision, Hartz Construction offers several unique services to make the process of selecting, designing, and financing a home as easy and fun as possible. For example, the full-service Design Center walks new home buyers through selecting materials, colors, and fixtures to personalize their new home. Experienced consultants are available, but home buyers are also given the choice to make their selections independently if they wish. Currently there are Hartz Homes available in select Chicagoland communities. These include: The Heather Glen, Hibernia, Nantucket Lakes, and Sky Harbor communities in the south suburb of New Lenox, and Whisper Creek and Manchester Cove in Mokena offer a multitude of plans and price points. Hibernia alone has 13 plans from $257,900. Armitage Pointe in Addison, Marquis Pointe in Montgomery, Marywood Meadows in Aurora, Playa Vista in Plainfield, Oliviabrook Townhomes in Oakbrook Terrace, and Essex Place Condominiums in Elmhurst offer an array of choices in the western suburbs.

Homebuyers who prefer a maintenance-free lifestyle will enjoy Playa Vista Townhomes starting at $219,900. Single-family homes and townhomes for those 55 or better are available in Lockport’s active-adult community of Lago Vista, where resort-style ranch living starts under $200,000. Marywood Meadows in Aurora, Marquis Pointe in Montgomery, and Bella Vista in Bolingbrook each celebrate the opening of new models this year.

Hartz Construction Company is proud of every home and every community they have created. It is a legacy they hope to continue for many generations to come. With 50 years of experience standing behind them, Hartz Construction has a strong, secure foundation just like the thousands of homes, condominiums, and apartments that bear their name.
